Benefits

Swimming is a low-impact workout that targets every region of your body and helps improve a variety of conditions, including posture, flexibility, endurance, strength, and more. Additionally, water-based exercises yield the following benefits:

  • Improved cardiovascular system
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Reduced stress
  • Alleviated joint pressure
  • Increased calories burned
  • Reduced swelling
  • Relaxed muscles
  • Reduced blood sugar levels
  • Reduced severity of cancer treatment side effects

How It Works

Using the physical and scientific qualities of water, pool therapy offers the perfect properties for both healing and exercise. The three most important are buoyancy, resistance, and temperature. Buoyancy is essentially the ability for things to float, meaning a portion of your body is supported by the water. This makes performing moves and motions easier, and helps increase flexibility. Resistance, however, allows for some difficulty, forcing muscles to work harder. The temperature of the water helps promote healing, with cold water constricting veins and forcing blood into organs, and hot water dilating veins and ridding the body of waste.

Aquatic Exercises

From jogging and aerobics to weight lifting and aquatic massages, there are a variety of hydrotherapy exercises you can try out. Each is intended to alleviate a certain symptom, tone a certain muscle, or improve a certain health condition. Some include:

  • Watsu
  • Ai Chi
  • Water walking or jogging
  • Aquatic bicycling
  • Balancing
  • Forward and side lunges
  • Pool planks
